Volleyball Falls in Four vs. No. 18 San Diego; Host No. 14 Pepperdine Next Saturday

Despite battling back in the fourth set to serve set point four times for a fifth set, Santa Clara fell 3-1 to No. 18 San Diego on Saturday in West Coast Conference play in the Leavey Center.  In their next match, the Broncos host No. 14 Pepperdine on Sat., Sept. 30 at 1 pm in the Leavey Center.

 Set scores 25-20, 11-25, 17-25 and 30-32.  Santa Clara is 11-5 and 1-1 in WCC play and San Diego is 10-2 and 2-0 in the WCC.
"We served five times to push it to the fifth set. We battled hard and we found a way to fight back when we got down.  This is all stuff we learned in the preseason and I am proud of our effort today. Now we just have to find a way to finish because we all really want to complete those games with a win," said Bronco head coach Jon Wallace.

Santa Clara hit .239 with 54 kills (21 e, 138 att.).  The Broncos collected 51 assists, 41 digs, two service aces, 10 service errors and 11 team blocks.  San Diego hit ..315 with 61 kills (20 e, 130 att.).  San Diego collected 59 assists, 49 digs, eight service aces, four service errors and 11 team blocks. 

The Broncos were led by Megan Anders, who collected 16 kills (3 e, 27 att.), hitting .481.  Taylor Milton had 11 kills, hitting .304 (4 e, 23 att.).  Lexi Williamson scored eight kills and; Katherine Douglas and Haley Cameron had seven each.  Alyssa Anderson had 25 assists and seven digs.  Chelsea Heier had 20 assists and six digs. 

Four USD players had double-digit kills with Sandra Lozic leading the charge with 14, hitting .345.  Chloe Ferrari had 10 kills, Katie Hoekman had 12 and Carrie Baird had 11.

A kill by Anders tied it up 1-1 and back-to-back kills by Milton cross court put the Broncos ahead 2-1.  The teams tied it up at 3 and 4 before USD scored four straight before Tatsch served it into the net. USD grabbed a five-point lead and then Wallace whistled for time, down 10-5.  Back-to-back Douglas kills off the block and a team block by Cameron and Douglas was followed by a block solo by Douglas to pull SCU within one.  The Broncos collected two of the next three points on kills by Cameron and Douglas to tie it up 11-11.  USD rallied with tough served to go up two, but Anders kill in the back row and a hitting error by Baird tied it up again, 13-13.  Anders kill in the back row tied it up 14-14.  The Broncos scored four of the next five on a couple kills by Anders, one by Williamson and a hitting error by the Toreros.  Timeout USD with the Broncos up 18-15.  Lozic's kill stopped the run, but Milton's cross-court kill got the sideout.  A kill by Cameron pushed the lead to three, 20-17.   Trading points twice, Lommori collected kills on both side-outs to make it 22-19 Broncos.  An Anders kill to the back row pushed it to 23-20 Broncos.  Timeout USD.  A hitting error by Alaysia Brown gave the Broncos another point and an ace by Rambis gave SCU a 25-20 set one win.  SCU hit .500 with 17 kills (2 e, 30 att.).  USD hit .333 with 13 kills (4 e, 27 att.).  Anders collected six kills.

USD opened the second set with two kills before Anders crushed it off a USD back row player to make it 2-1.  USD scored four of the next six to take a 6-3 lead before Williamson's tip stopped the run.  USD went ahead 10-5 when Wallace whistled for time.  Cameron's kill stopped the run, 11-6 USD.  USD scored two of the next three to go up 14-7, but an Anders kill stopped the run.  A kill by Cameron pushed it to 16-10 USD.  With USD up 18-10, Wallace whistled for time.  USD scored four straight times out of the timeout before serving it into the net, 23-11 USD.  Two more kills and USD won set two 25-11.  SCU hit .120 with eight kills. USD hit .636 with 16 kills.  Anders had three kills for SCU and Lozic had four for USD.

 USD took a 3-1 lead in set three, scoring twice off Bronco service errors.  A dump by Anderson gave the Broncos a sideout.  A Milton gave SCU the ball again, down 4-3.  Luzic hit it right into the Bronco team block to tie it up 4-4.  Another team block, this one with Cameron and Williamson, tied it up 5-5.  Another team block by Cameron and Williamson tied it up again, 6-6.  A team block by Cameron and Lommori and a kill by Douglas made it 8-6 Broncos.  The teams traded points to tie it up 9-9 and a Douglas kill tied it up 10-10.  Williamson's crushing blow tied it up 12-12.  USD scored three straight to go up 15-12 when SCU called for time.  Anders ran the slide for a kill, but USD scored three more to move ahead 18-13. The Broncos scored two out of their own timeout, but USD scored four more to take a 23-16 lead.   A block solo by Cameron stopped the run.  Back-to-back kills by USD gave USD the 25-17 set three victory.  SCU hit .086 with 10 kills.  USD hit .235 with 14 kills.

USD took a 4-0 lead early in the fourth set.  Wallace whistled for time.  Milton crushed it back row to side out.  After a Bronco service error, Douglas knocked it off a USD player for a kill.  USD went up 9-2.  After a kill by Cameron, USD crushed it to up 10-3.  Anders had two back row kills for sideout and after Williamson crushed it, the Broncos collected a team block, 11-7 USD.  Another Williamson kill gave SCU the sideout, down 13-8.  An ace by Heier pulled SCU within three, 13-10.  USD scored four of the next seven points to go up 17-12 before Lommori banked a kill off the block.  A block solo by Anders and a hitting error by Lozic made it 17-15 USD. Timeout USD.  A ball handling error by USD pulled SCU within one, 17-16.  A tip by Anders gave SCU the sideout.  After SCU was called in the net, another Anders kill pulled SCU within one.  A kill by USD off the block was followed by a Williamson kill.  Milton's kill in the back row tied it up 20-20.  USD was called in the net to put SCU up 21-20, its first lead of the set.  Williamson hit it out to give USD the sideout.  Milton's kill off the block made it 22-21 SCU.  Douglas crushed it down in a quick rally to put SCU up 23-21. Timeout USD.  A Bronco service error out of the timeout made it 23-22 SCU.  Brown smacked it way out to put SCU up 24-22.  A kill by USD and it was 24-23 Broncos.  Timeout Broncos.    A Bronco hitting error tied it up 24-24. Lommori crushed the ball off the block to tie it up 25-25.  A team block by Anders and Lommori put SCU up 26-25.  A Bronco service error tied it up 26-26.  Anders smacked it down in the back row for a kill.  The two traded points again to tie it up 27-27.  A block solo by Anders put SCU up by one again, 28-27.  A kill by USD tied it up again, but USD wacked it out on the next play , 29-28 Broncos.  USD tied it up again with a kill, 29-29.  Another kill off the block, SCU went up 30-29.  Brown's kill tied it up 30-30.  A kill by Tatsch put USD up 31-30.  An ace by Baird gave USD a 32-30 set four win.
