SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's tennis players Madison Clarke and Maddie Pothoff have been invited to compete in the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships as one of the top-16 Division I doubles teams in the nation.
"We're really excited for Maddie and Madison to get to play in the main draw of the ITA All-American Tournament," said head coach Ben Cabell. "It's a great honor for them as a doubles team and for us as a school. Santa Clara has never had an individual participate either in singles or doubles in the main draw. It's going to be the top-16 doubles teams in the nation playing and they are one of them."
For the 33rd consecutive year, the Riviera Tennis Club has invited the nation's top Division I women's players to compete in the Championship in Pacific Palisades, California, with the main draw scheduled to run from Thursday to Sunday.
The Bronco duo qualified for the Championships based on their preseason ranking of No. 19 nationally that is derived from last year's results.
"Maddie Pothoff had an incredible season last year being the NCAA runner-up in doubles at Alabama. Madison Clarke had a great season playing number one doubles for us so the two of them combined had a preseason doubles ranking which was high enough for them to get into the main draw of the tournament," said Cabell.
Along with vying for the All-American national title, players will be competing to earn a berth into the 2017 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, which takes place Nov. 1-5, in Palm Desert, California. The doubles semifinalists and consolation doubles champion and finalist advance to the fall championships.
