March 15, 2010

SANTA CLARA, Calif.- The Santa Clara women's tennis team earned their fourth straight win yesterday defeating Northern Iowa, 5-2, at the Degheri Tennis Center. The Broncos improve to 9-3 on the season while the Panthers drop to 7-4.

Santa Clara swept Northern Iowa in doubles play and has won the doubles point in three of their last four matches.

In singles play, the Broncos took four out of six singles matches to earn the final 5-2 win. Freshman Alex Zaniewski defeated Phoebe Walker 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 1 position. Fellow freshman Maggie McGeorge added another win to her impressive 11-1 season record, defeating Sampada Kanade at the No. 4 spot, 6-2, 7-6, (8-6).

Junior Carmen Pham and sophomore Kimmi Cox earned their wins at the No. 5 and 6 singles position to end the day with a 5-2 Bronco win.

"We played really well yesterday, especially in doubles," said Bronco head coach Ben Cabell. "Northern Iowa has a different style of playing so we had to make some adjustments. It was also great to see some different players contribute; Kimmi Cox really stepped up for us at the No. 6 single position. We had a pretty strong team down the line and it was great to pull out the win."

Santa Clara will take on Marquette this Friday, Mar. 19 at Degheri Tennis Center. First serve is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
