BERKELEY, Calif. - Freshman Courtney Hull captured the White Bracket at the Cal Invitational with a victory over Bobbie Englery of California. Hull finished the weekend 3-0 in singles for Santa Clara. Freshman Andrea Kwong and sophomore Meghan Madden also played on Sunday, losing close matches to competitors from Arizona State.
After defeating San Francisco's Nisha Dixit and Saint Mary's Caitlin Aloia to reach the final, Hull pulled out a tough three-setter against Englert, winning 6-7 (4), 7-5, 6-3. Hull had her chances to win the first set, but she did not quit after losing the tiebreaker and bounced back with two strong sets.
In the other White Bracket match of the day, Madden dropped a close two-setter in the Consolation Final to Amanda Martin of Arizona State, 6-4, 6-4. In the Blue Bracket, Kwong lost in the Consolation Semifinals in three sets to Micaela Hein of Arizona State. Kwong dropped the first set 6-1, but battled back to capture set number two 7-6 (3) and even the match. However, the Bronco freshman could not keep it going in the third, falling 6-2.
The Broncos have the upcoming weekend off and get back into action at the Saint Mary's Invitational on Oct. 12 in Moraga, Calif.
