Oct. 24, 2003

STANFORD, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's tennis team opened play at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association/Omni Hotels Northwest Women's Regional Championships today, hosted by Stanford at the Taube Family Tennis Center.

In singles, six of 10 Bronco student-athletes won their opening-round matches. Senior Jenny Siegel led the way with her 6-1, 6-1 win over Washington's Megan Flynn. Junior Catherine Cochrane earned a come-from-behind victory in her first outing, recording a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory over California's Rio Del Rosario. Sophomore Jessie Strunk and freshmen Erika Barnes, Kimberly Daniel and Kelly Leathers also advanced with their victories. All six Broncos fell in the Round of 64.

Seventeen Regional Championships are taking place over these last two weekends of October at campuses throughout the country to determine the field for the National event. The singles finalists and doubles champion from this event will earn sports in the November 6-9 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships at the University of Michigan.

The 2003 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, the nation's premier collegiate indoor tennis tournament, is the second of three national championship events for college tennis this season. The first event-the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships-was held last week, and the third event is season-end NCAA Championships in May. The ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships feature a 32-player singles field and 16-team doubles field. Overall, more than 10,000 players from nearly 600 schools participate annually in the ITA Regional and National Intercollegiate Championships.

The event continues through Sunday. The Broncos will conclude their fall season with their participation at this tournament.
