SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's tennis team earned a 4-3 victory over West Coast Conference rival Saint Mary's, and in doing so, gave head coach Aby Ryan her 100th career victory.
Senior Mariko Kawakami clinched the match at No. 5 singles, with her come-from-behind victory over the Gaels' Megan Schulman. Ryan, now in her ninth season as head coach, said she kept the ball from Kawakami's match to mark her coaching milestone.
"I'm very excited about today's win," she added. "To reach 100 victories against Saint Mary's makes it even sweeter. They've been a huge rival throughout the years."
Ryan is the most winningest coach in the women's tennis program history. Her record now stands at 100-86. With the Broncos' 5-2 victory over Pacific in last year's regular season home finale, Ryan surpassed Marygrace Colby's 95 wins, achieved from 1964-79.
Doubles partners Christine Limbers and Janalle Kaloi added singles wins to their afternoon, taking control of the top of the lineup with straight-set victories. The Gaels even the match at three points apiece with wins on courts three, four and six, setting up the deciding match on court five.
"Mariko played really scrappy today, which I liked," Ryan said. "She did whatever it took to pull the win out."
Santa Clara, now 2-0 on the season, remains on the road and will visit Cal Poly on Friday, Feb. 7, for a 1:30 p.m. match. The Broncos will remain on the coast and play CS Fullerton on the 8th and UC Santa Barbara on the 9th. Both of those matches will take place at Santa Barbara on their respective dates at 10 a.m.
