SANTA CLARA, Calif. – West Coast Conference play begins for Santa Clara softball Friday at BYU with a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
On Wednesday, the Broncos fell to Fresno State 9-1 in 6 innings.

Santa Clara (5-24) is led on offense by Hannah Russell who is hitting .280 and is tied for second on the team with 12 RBIs. Eleni Spirakis also has 12 RBIs and is second with 10 runs scored. Taylor Burns' 14 RBIs is the most on Santa Clara and Ellie Fisher has scored a team-high 16 runs with 14 stolen bases.
Aubree Kim has appeared in 20 games and started a team-high 13 with one complete game. She also leads the Broncos with 40 strikeouts in 61 1/3 innings. McCall James has appeared in 14 games and started five with a complete game, covering 38 2/3 innings.
BYU (17-18) is hitting .255 as a team with a conference-leading 38 home runs. The Cougars have scored 156 runs, also the most in the league.
Libby Sugg leads the team with a .368 batting average, seven home runs, and 31 RBIs. Rylee Jensen has scored a team-high 30 runs while hitting .258 and Lexi Tarrow is hitting .337 with a team-best 11 steals.
Keri Viramontes leads BYU in appearances (20), complete games (9), ERA (2.23), and innings pitched (84 2/3). Arissa Paulson has started 14 games with seven complete games and tossed 76 innings while striking out a team-best 63. She has also thrown three shutouts on the year.
