SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara softball heads down south to play at the San Diego Classic beginning Friday on the campuses of San Diego and San Diego State.
The Broncos open the tournament Friday at 9 a.m. against No. 21 Long Beach State and Boston at 2 p.m. On Saturday, they face Central Florida at 9 a.m. and CSUN at 4:30 p.m. The finale will be Sunday at 11:30 a.m. against No. 3 UCLA.
Santa Clara (0-10) has played a number of close games already this year, with four games being decided by two or fewer runs. The Broncos have had the tying run thrown out at home on a wild pitch in the seventh and were walked-off against by Stanford.
Santa Clara has yet to get its offense going as a team, scoring 20 runs on the year with 13 doubles and a triple.
Taylor Burns leads the team with a .276 average and five RBIs while adding two doubles and a triple. Morgan Modesto has a team high four doubles and is hitting .250 while Ellie Fisher is hitting .214 with a team best six runs scored.
In the circle, Micaela Vierra has pitched 27 1/3 innings, the most on the team, in seven games, including four starts, with a pair of complete games. Aubree Kim has made six appearances and started five games while tossing 24 2/3 innings. Kim leads the team in strikeouts.
