Senior Kristin Welsh Provides Go-Ahead RBI in PCSC Victory Saturday

SARATOGA, Calif. – Santa Clara University's softball team got its 'Senior Weekend' off to a good start. The Broncos used a go-ahead RBI single from senior Kristin Welsh and solid pitching from sophomore Jessica Turner to beat visiting CSU Bakersfield 8-5 in the opening game of Saturday's doubleheader.

Turner came in with Santa Clara (10-41; 4-14 PCSC) trailing 4-2 in the second inning of Game One, and was able to turn away CSU Bakersfield (12-38; 5-13 PCSC), who had the bases loaded and was threatening to break the game open.

Turner allowed just four hits and an unearned run the rest of the way, allowing the Bronco bats to respond. Welsh, a four-year player from La Habra, Calif. and Rosary High School broke a 5-5 tie with a single in the fifth. Welsh went 2 for 2 in Game One and Jamie Wallis and Stephanie Fisher each had three hits and SCU would go on to win 8-5.

"Getting the win in the first game was great for us," said Santa Clara head coach Lisa Mize. "Jess (Turner) pitched a good game. We came from behind, which we've had trouble doing this year, so that was a big positive. We also had a number of good at-bats and good swings at the plate, putting the ball in play."

Welsh and classmate Briana Knight will be honored prior to Sunday's doubleheader with CSU Bakersfield, which begins at 12 noon. The team will also be hosting a post-game BBQ, which should start around 4 p.m.

Despite a game effort from freshman pitcher Jaymi Bautista-Geiger, who was returning from injury, CSU Bakersfield outlasted Santa Clara in Game Two, scoring two runs in the sixth and five more in the seventh to win the finale 8-2.

"Jaymi Bautista-Geiger has been injured for most of this season, so it was good to see her go out there and throw pretty well," said Mize about Game Two. "I think she got a bit tired there at the end and things got away from us. We hope to clean it up a bit tomorrow and if we do, we can win two."
