Women's Soccer Tops Weber State 6-1

Sept. 29, 2000

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Senior Megan Horvath posted six points tonight as the 15th-ranked Santa Clara women's soccer team defeated Weber State 6-1 at the Santa Clara adidas Classic, held at Buck Shaw Stadium.

The Broncos' record improves to 6-3-1, while Weber State remains winless at 0-9-1.

Horvath opened up the scoring with two goals in the first half, after being set up by Kathleen Celio and Aly Wagner, respectively. After a score by Heather Aldama, Horvath assisted on Kerry Cathcart's goal at the 49th minute. Freshman Kristi Candau entered the match in the second half and responded with two goals, assisted by Celio on the first and Aldama and Horvath on the second.

The six-goal tally tied the season high for goals scored in a match, as the Broncos also posted six in a shut out of Oregon earlier this month. Santa Clara posted 21 shots tonight, five each by Horvath and Wagner. The Wildcats were limited to five total shots.

Earlier this evening, No. 13 Stanford and 17th-ranked Wake Forest opened the tournament with 2-2 tie after two overtimes. Both Demon Deacon goals were scored by Joline Charlton, while the Stanford goals were posted by Christy LaPierre and Marcie Ward. Five yellow cards were issued as Wake Forest was issued 26 fouls to the Cardinal's 11. Wake's record moves to 6-3-1 while Stanford is now 6-2-1 on the season.

The Santa Clara adidas Classic will conclude on Sunday, Oct. 1. Weber State will take on Stanford at noon, while Santa Clara will host No. 17 Wake Forest at 2 p.m.
