Hedge Named WCC Player of the Year, Six Other Women's Soccer Players Earn All-WCC

SAN BRUNO, Calif.Kelcie Hedge was named West Coast Conference Player of the Year and six other Santa Clara women's soccer players brought home All-West Coast Conference honors, including a league-high four first-team picks, as announced by the league Tuesday.

Hedge becomes the 11th Bronco to take home player of the year and the first since the Broncos had back-to-back winners in 2014 (Sofia Huerta) and 2013 (Julie Johnston).

She joined Maria Sanchez, Kelsey Turnbow, and Alex Loera on the first team with Maddy Gonzalez, Marika Guay, and Skylar Smith being named honorable mention. Guay and Smith were also named WCC All-Freshman.

The four first team selections are the most for the Broncos since placing five on the list in 2006.

Hedge finished second on the team with seven goals while adding two assists and starting all but one game. During conference play, she led the team with six goals, scoring all six in a span of five matches.

Sanchez is currently tied for the national lead with 14 assists, the most by a Bronco since 2002. Twice this season she tied a program record with four assists in a game (Aug. 20 vs. Cal, Nov. 3 vs. Pacific). She has also added five goals and leads Santa Clara with 24 points.

Turnbow, the 2017 WCC Freshman of the year, is tied with Hedge with seven goals scored this year and is also second on the team with five assists. It is her second consecutive first team nod and was all-freshman last year as well.

Loera started all but one game during the regular season while adding two assists. Last year she was named to the second team and the all-freshman team.

Gonzalez led Santa Clara with eight goals while adding two assists. She was honored on the All-WCC list for the third year in a row after taking home second team honors in 2017 and all-freshman in 2016.

Guay also started all but one game on the year while adding an assist.

Smith scored six goals, including three game winners, in her rookie campaign while adding an assist.
