Women's Soccer To Face Milwaukee in First Round of NCAA Tournament Saturday at Home

– For the 28th time in program history, No. 5 Santa Clara women's soccer is headed to the NCAA Tournament. The Broncos are a three seed and will host Milwaukee, winner of the Horizon League automatic bid with a 16-1-1 record, Saturday at 1 p.m. in the first round.

Santa Clara finished the regular season 16-3-1, the most wins since going 17-2 in the national title season of 2001. The Broncos also had their best nonconference season at 9-1-1 since 2001 when they went 10-1.

Maria Sanchez has been a driving force for the 15th-best offense in the nation. She is tied for the lead in the country with 14 assists, the most by a Bronco since Megan Kakadelas had the same number in 2002. Sanchez has also tied a program record twice this year, picking up four assists against Cal on Aug. 20 and again on Saturday against Pacific. She has also scored five times.

Maddy Gonzalez leads the team with eight goals while Kelsey Turnbow and Kelcie Hedge have both scored seven. Turnbow is second on the team with five assists as well. Freshman Skylar Smith has found the back of the net six times with six others scoring at least a goal apiece.

In net Melissa Lowder has started all 20 games while making 68 saves and has six shutouts.
