Freshman of the Year Johnston Highlights Santa Clara All-WCC Selections

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Freshman Julie Johnston was selected as the WCC Women's Soccer Freshman of the Year, becoming Santa Clara's eighth-overall WCC Freshman of the Year and second in as many years, as Allie Vernon was Co-Freshman of the Year in 2009.

Johnston's selection highlights the 2010 All-WCC selections for Santa Clara, who placed two players on the All-WCC First Team, four on the second team, and four received honorable mention.

Senior forward Anessa Patton and junior Bianca Henninger were named All-WCC First Team.  Patton finished tops in the conference in overall goals (9), goals-per-game (0.50), and game-winning-goals (5). She also finished second in points-per-game (1.11).  In conference-only play, she had the most points (11), points-per-game (1.57), goals (5), goals-per-game average (0.71), and game-winning goals (3).  Henninger, who started all but one game in net this season for SCU, owned the best overall save percentage (.854), was second in goals-against-average (0.63), and tied for second in shutouts (7).  In conference-only play, she tied for first in shutouts (3) and save percentage (.909) and was second in goals-against-average (0.37) and shutouts-per-game (0.50).

Johnston was selected to the All-WCC Second Team along with senior Lindsey Johnson, sophomore Olivia Klei, and senior Amanda Poach.  Johnston scored two goals and led the team with five assists.  Johnson helped the defense post eight shutouts and a 0.78 goals-against-average.  Klei had a 2010 WCC single-season best of three assists in one game (against Gonzaga on Oct. 22) and finished the regular season with one goal and four assists. Poach had two assists in the regular season.

Receiving honorable mention was senior Maxine Goynes, sophomore Lauren Matheson, freshman Ellie Rice, and sophomore Meleana Shim.  Goynes registered three goals and three assists on the year, Matheson had three goals and four assists. Rice started 14 games in her rookie season, and Shim posted one goal and three assists.
