SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Kiki Bosio's goal in the 46th minutes was all the Broncos needed to sweep the Sun Devils of Arizona State Friday night in Tempe, Ariz. With the win, Santa Clara improved to 5-0-1 overall, while ASU fell to 4-3-0 on the year. The goal was Bosio's third of the season. Junior goalkeeper Meagan McCray posted three saves in route to her second shutout of the season.
"There was an unusual environment tonight with the wind," said head coach Jerry Smith. "So not only did we have to struggle with playing on the road in front of an energetic crowd, we also had to deal with the wind. That made the first half tough. But at the half, we talked about doing the little things right and playing well despite the conditions. And, that is what we did. Kiki's goal really settled us down and allowed us to control the second half."
The Broncos faced a series of environmental challenges in the first half as fierce winds rolled onto the field at kick off. Besides battling a hardworking Arizona State squad, Santa Clara had to face the winds head on. SCU was only able to take two shots before halftime. Coming back after the break, the Broncos set up a series of combination plays that saw Katherine Reynolds pass the ball into the box to find Bosio. The sophomore forward did an excellent job of switching her defender's attention with a quick touch away from the goal, but quickly reversed herself and took a hard, right-footed shot which found the far side of the goal.
For the remainder of the game, the Broncos limited the Sun Devils to only one shot while taking four more of their own. But the little plays and the right moves with the ball, allowed Santa Clara to control the second half and end the game with a win.
The Broncos return to action on Sunday, Sept. 23 against the Wildcats of Arizona. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
