LAKEWOOD, Wash. – Santa Clara women's golf carded a 24-over 600 to take sole possession of third-place, three shots behind co-leaders Houston Baptist and Grand Canyon, after 36 holes of the Pat Lesser-Harbottle Invitational. Final round action on the 6,086-yard, par-72 Tacoma Country and Golf Club course is set for Tuesday morning.
The Broncos were the only team to score below 300 in the opening round, taking a one-shot lead after 18 holes with a 299. They carded a second-round 301 to fall off the pace by three-shots.
"Overall, I'm happy with the day," head coach Krystal Kelly said. "For the first time in a long time we got off to a great start."
The Broncos were led by sophomore Sarah Busey, who entered the clubhouse with a share of fourth-place after a two-round total of 2-over 146. She birdied four holes while playing an even-par second-round and tallied seven birdies for the day. The Broncos amassed a tournament-best 23 birdies over the first 36 holes.
Kaity Cummings of Houston Baptist was the only player to score below par, taking a 2-shot lead after 36 holes with a 1-under 143.
Competing in her first collegiate tournament, freshman Duong Tran completed the day at 164.
"This golf course is really tight so you can tell when we missed the fairways," Kelly stated. "I'm confident we'll play well tomorrow."
