PALM DESERT, Calif. – Sarah Busey a collegiate-best 2-under 70 in the second round of Saturday's Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate to help Santa Clara women's golf claim fourth place after 36 holes of play in the team's second tournament of the season.
Busey, who posted a 77 in the first round, is tied for second at 3-over. Busey had four birdies and two bogeys in the second round.
"I'm really proud of Sarah," head coach Krystal Kelly said. "She played solid tee to greens."
Emily Sumner is tied for sixth at 5-over 149 (74-75) for the Broncos who have total of 42-over 618 (312-306). The team's second-round tally was the third-best in the 12-team field and improved it from a fifth-place tie after the opening 18 holes on the 6,097-yard Classic Club course.
"Emily had a few tough holes, but she bounced back," Kelly said. "That was great to see."
Despite having two players in the top 10, Santa Clara has some work to do in Sunday's final round in order to repeat as champion.
UTEP leads the field at 32-over 608, Cal Baptist is second at 613 and UC Riverside is third (615).
"This golf course is so hard that 10 shots back is not that much," Kelly said. "Tomorrow is really focus on the process. My message was we're going to be aggressive. We're going to be fearless and going to capitalize when we can and we'll see what happens.
Valeria Mendizabal of UTEP leads the 70-player field at 2-over 146 (73-73). Jakeishya Le of UC Riverside is tied with Busey for second place.
"It's great that Sarah and Emily both have a shot to win it," Kelly said.
The final round begins at 7:30 a.m. Sunday with a shotgun start. Live scoring is available at Golfstat.com.
