MARICOPA, Ariz. – Santa Clara women's golf carded a program record 286 in the first round of the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic, ending Monday alone in third-place with a 583 total after 36 holes.
The Broncos will enter Tuesday's final round 17 shots behind leader Sacramento State, which blistered the 6,131-yard, par-72 Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club to a 10-under 566. New Mexico State is second, three shots better than the Broncos.
"They played incredible, I'm so proud," head coach Krystal Kelly said of her team. "I was literally jumping for joy."
Just a few days after claiming a third-place finish at the Anuenue Spring Break Classic, senior Kristin Le is in the hunt again. Le opened the day with a 3-under 69 and was even-par over the second round, entering the clubhouse alone in second-place at 3-under 141, just one shot behind leader Pun Chanachai of New Mexico State.
Le led the field in par-3 scoring and carded a tournament-best 10 birdies over the first 36 holes.
Senior Kyleigh Moreno eagled the par-5 13th hole in the morning session on her way to a 1-under 71. She carded a second-round 75 and is tied for 16th at 2-over 146. Freshman Emily Sumner matched her career-low with a first-round 71 and ended the day one stroke back of Moreno and six other golfers tied for 23rd at 147.
Freshman Sarah Busey was the only Bronco to have a lower second-round score with a 2-over 74 after an opening 75. Her 149 total puts her in a tie for 34th.
The old program record of 287 was accomplished twice. The last was here at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic in 2016 when the Broncos secured a runner-up finish.
Final round action is schedule to begin with a shotgun format at 7:30 a.m. PT. Live scoring is available at Golfstat.com.
