KAPALUA, Maui – Senior Kristin Le shot a 1-under 71 leading Santa Clara women's golf into fourth-place with a 303 team score after the first-round of the Anuenue Spring Break Classic.
Le entered the clubhouse tied for third after carding her lowest-round of the spring. She's 2-shots back of leader Kaci Masuda of host Hawai'i and 1-shot behind second-place Ana Margarita Raga of Utah Valley.
"Kristin played really well today," head coach Krystal Kelly said of her No. 1 player.
Starting the round on the 10th hole, the Broncos played a strong first nine and held the lead briefly, but they added nine shots to the team total over the final two holes to drop into fourth-place at 15-over 303.
"We got off to a great start today," Kelly added. "We played really well on the back-nine, but we didn't close out our round. The front-nine is more difficult, especially the last few holes."
Only 22 strokes separate the congested 13-team field with the Broncos 13-shots behind first-round leader Hawai'i. No. 29 Louisville (296) and No. 54 Oregon State (301), the two highest ranked teams in the Golfstat.com poll competing in the event, ended the first round between Santa Clara and Hawai'i.
Sophomore Chloe Wong and freshman Emily Sumner are among a group of 11 golfers tied for 28th-place at 5-over 77. Kyleigh Moreno is a shot back of that crowd at 6-over 78. Sarah Busey scored a first-round 80 to tie for 57th.
The field returns to the 6,022-yard, par-72 Kapalua Bay Course for Tuesday's second round, which is scheduled to begin with tee times at 11 a.m. PT. Live scoring is available at Golfstat.com.
