ANACONDA, Mont. – Sophomore Chloe Wong had the best 54-hole score and the first top-5 finish of her career leading Santa Clara women's golf to a fourth-place showing at the Battle at Old Works, completed Tuesday on the 6,456-yard, par-72 Old Works Golf Club.
The Broncos scored a final round 298 to complete the two-day event with a team total of 889 (+25), 11 shots behind winner North Dakota State.
"We didn't play our best today, but they fought through it," head coach Krystal Kelly said of her squad. "Last year this would have been a great round for us, but we left some shots out there today. I think some work on our 100-yards and in will help."
Wong carded the two lowest rounds of her brief career yesterday and followed that with a final round 3-over 75 to claim a tie for third-place with a pair of golfers at 2-over 218. Her previous low 54-hole score was 227, which was accomplished twice last season. Wong finished four shots behind individual medalist Baylee Barckley of Montana.
Freshman Emily Sumner had the Broncos low round of the day with an even-par 72 to climb into a 15th-place tie with a trio of players, including teammate Kyleigh Moreno. The four finished at 9-over 225.
Competing as an individual, freshman Sarah Busey matched Sumner with low-round honors. Her even-par 72 vaulted Busey eight spots up the leaderboard into 25th place with a total of 13-over 229.
"There is a tremendous amount of potential on this team," noted Kelly. "I'm looking forward to getting some practice in with them in preparation for our next tournament."
The Broncos will next compete at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic, which is scheduled to begin on Sep. 29 from the Classic Club in Palm Desert.
