Women's Golf Opens 2009 At Lady Braveheart

Feb. 4, 2009

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's golf teams opens the 2009 spring season on February 9-10 at the UC Riverside Lady Braveheart Invitational at the Oak Valley Golf Club in Beaumont.

The Oak Valley Golf Club is spread out over 6,050 yards and boasts a par of 72. The Broncos will compete against 12 other teams including West Coast Conference foe Portland. It will be a 36-hole tournament over the course of two days. Last year the Broncos finished in ninth place with Miki Ueoka leading the team with a fourth place finish.

"The team is excited to start their spring season off at the Lady Braveheart," said Bronco head coach Polly Schulze. "We tend to play well at this event and it's an opportunity to continue what has been a strong year for us. Finishing tied for first place at the Boise State Invitational in the fall gave the team the confidence to believe that they can post some great numbers. They shot a 294, which is the lowest team score in the history of the program. Moving forward I believe that they are able to post numbers like that every time they tee it up. We have a very talented and exciting team, and I would not be surprised to see more great finishes out of them this season."

The Broncos played in three tournaments during the fall season which included a tie-for-1st finish at the Boise State Bronco Fall Invitational in Meridian, Idaho. Sophomore Ueoka earned her first collegiate win in the tournament. She fired off back-to-back rounds of 70 and finished at four-under par. The Broncos also finished tied-for-3rd at the Cal Poly Coast BMW College Challenge in Nipomo, with Ueoka recording a top-10 finish.

Also returning for Santa Clara this spring are juniors Erin Sullivan and Jamie Nonaka, sophomore Katie Sharpe and freshman Tammy Surtees. Three had their best performances of the fall at the Cal Poly Coast BMW College Challenge. Sharpe tied for 12th, Nonaka tied for 16th and Sullivan tied for 24th.

The Broncos will participate in three more tournaments this spring before competing in the WCC Championships at Hiddenbrook Golf Course on April 13-14 in Vallejo, Calif.
