April 29, 2005

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's and women's rowing teams participated in the West Coast Conference championships at Lake Natoma Friday with the Bronco men capturing a second-place finish in the varsity eight event and the women tying for fourth overall with Saint Mary's in the official league team title.

The women's championship is sanctioned by the WCC, while the men's event is unofficial as it is not a league sponsored sport.

The Gonzaga women's rowing team captured its ninth straight WCC rowing championship as it bested second-place San Diego by eight points. Gonzaga accumulated 30 points to finish in first place overall, followed by USD. Loyola Marymount placed third with 20 points, while the Broncos and Gaels recorded eight points each.

On the men's side, the Broncos placed second in the varsity eight race in a time of 6:18.1. SCU finished 4.6 seconds behind Gonzaga, which won both the varsity and novice eight races. In the novice eight event, SCU placed third behind the Bulldogs and Loyola Marymount with a time of 6:44.

Laura Hellenthal of the women's crew earned All-West Coast Conference honors for the Broncos. Hellenthal spent two seasons with the varsity boats and was an integral part of the Broncos' recent success.

Both teams will continue action tomorrow on Lake Natoma in the WIRA Championships. Racing will begin on Saturday morning and continue through Sunday afternoon.
