SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Santa Clara beach volleyball squares off against familiar foes on Friday and Saturday at the West Coast Conference Midseason Invitational (Santa Cruz, California/Santa Cruz Main Beach). The Broncos begin the event with a 10 a.m. matchup Friday against No. 18 Saint Mary's, then face San Francisco at noon.
Saturday matchups and start times will be determined based on Friday's results. The field is made up of six WCC programs, including Loyola Marymount, Portland and Pacific.
Santa Clara hits the sand for the first time in more than a month. The Broncos were swept by No. 12 Cal and lost a close match 3-2 against San Francisco on February 23 in Berkeley, California. Alex Anthony/Chloe Loreen (No. 2) and Michelle Gajdka/Liliana Light (No. 3) won their pairs matches against the Dons.
No. 18 Saint Mary's enters the week at 10-4 overall and 3-1 in WCC tilts ahead of a Wednesday matchup against No. 12 Cal. The Gaels won a program record 10 straight duals Feb. 24-March 23, including a pair of victories over nationally-ranked Stanford. Sarah Chase/Lindsey Knudsen are 10-4 at the No. 1 spot and the Gaels have used the same five pairs for all 14 competitions.
San Francisco enters the week at 7-7 overall and 1-2 in WCC tilts. The Dons went 7-3 from Feb. 22-March 14 and have lost three straight contests entering the weekend. Their top pairing of Carly Lowry/Anna Dalla Vecchia scored the team's only match victory against San José State in the last competition on March 16.
