SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Ninth-seeded Santa Clara women's basketball tipsoff the West Coast Conference Tournament Thursday at noon against No. 8 seed Pepperdine.
The Broncos dropped a pair of games to conclude the regular season, falling at LMU and to Saint Mary's on Senior Day.
Santa Clara is 40-36 all-time against Pepperdine with the first meeting coming in 1978-79. The two teams split the season-series with the Broncos winning at home and falling by one on the road.
Santa Clara (9-20) enters the tournament with the conference's best defense. The Broncos allow 58.0 points per game while forcing 16.1 turnovers per game and collecting 9.0 steals per game.
Morgan McGwire leads Santa Clara in scoring with 10.0 ppg and is second in the WCC with 9.2 rpg and 1.9 blocks per game. She is fifth in the conference with 2.2 spg as well. Ashlyn Herlihy is second in scoring with 8.6 ppg and grabs 5.1 rpg. Taylor Berry is second with 6.3 rpg and is scoring 8.1 ppg. Kyla Martin's 4.3 assists per game is fifth in the league and she is scoring 8.3 ppg.
Pepperdine (9-19) is scoring 66.8 ppg as a team on 40.3-percent shooting from the field and 33.0-percent from beyond the arc.
Yasmine Robinson-Bacote is third in the WCC with 17.8 ppg and leads the Waves with 7.4 rpg. Paige Fecske scores 10.5 ppg and averages a team-high 2.9 apg. She has knocked down 43 3-pointers to lead Pepperdine. No other Wave scores more than 6.8 ppg.
