West Coast Conference Announces 2016-17 Women’s Basketball Schedule

2016-17 Santa Clara Women's Basketball Schedule

SAN BRUNO, Calif. – The West Coast Conference released its women's basketball league schedule today. Conference play opens Dec. 29 and wraps-up Feb. 25 for the Broncos in their first season under head coach Bill Carr. The WCC tournament will be at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas March 2-7.

The nonconference schedule will be released in the near future.

The Broncos kick-off the 2016-17 conference season with big challenge right out of the gate. On Dec. 29 they host last season's regular season champion BYU. Two days later they play at WCC Tournament champion San Francisco.

Three of the next four games are at home but from Jan. 19-28 Santa Clara will play four straight road games. They then come home for four consecutive games from Feb. 2-11.

After three straight road games, the regular season ends Feb. 25 with senior day against Saint Mary's.

Santa Clara finished in a tie for third last season in the WCC, the No. 8 RPI conference in the country, and tied a program record with 13 conference wins. The only other time Santa Clara had won 13 league games was in 1990-91 when the Broncos won the conference.

The Broncos were rewarded with their first postseason appearance in 10 years as they earned a bid to the WNIT.

Santa Clara put an end to some long losing streaks against WCC opponents last year. The Broncos 71-64 victory over Gonzaga on Jan. 28 snapped a 20-game losing streak to the Zags. They then beat the Bulldogs 59-58 in the WCC tournament. It was the first time Santa Clara beat Gonzaga twice in a season since 2002-03.

The Broncos also snapped a 10-game losing streak to San Diego with their 61-47 win on Feb. 11. The last time the Broncos were able to beat San Diego was a 62-57 home win on Jan. 13, 2011. The last road win (67-63) was on Jan. 28, 2006.
