SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Junior guard Quinn Thomas tied her career high with 24 points to lead the Santa Clara University women's basketball team in a contest against Saint Mary's, but the Broncos' comeback fell short, as the Gaels recorded a 59-51 win in West Coast Conference action this afternoon at the Leavey Center. SCU falls to 6-12 overall, 2-3 in conference play, while Saint Mary's improves to 12-7, 4-1.

Sheridan Arrendondo posted a 17-point, 7-rebound performance to lead the Gaels, including eight at intermission, with her team ahead 27-19. By the first media time out of the second half, Saint Mary's made it a 15-point advantage, on a three from the top of the key by Serena Benavente. The Gaels would increase that lead to 17 on two free throws from Katie Ludwick.

That's when the Bronco comeback started, as SCU outscored Saint Mary's 15-2 during a six-minute span. Thomas hit two of her six threes, and redshirt freshman Tori Markey scored five points during the run, as Santa Clara pulled within four, 47-43 with seven minutes on the clock. Two minutes later, freshman forward Jenni Gottschalk converted a three-point play while freshman guard Yasemin Kimyacioglu scored on a lay-up to reduce the deficit to three, 51-48.

It would be as close as the Broncos would get, as missed attempts forced the home squad to foul. Saint Mary's made all six attempts from the charity stripe in the final three minutes to secure the victory.

Gottschalk finished with 10 rebounds to lead the Broncos defensively. Markey finished with nine points and seven boards. For the Gaels, Monica Mertle added 11, while Evynn Van Burger also netted 11 points, but adds 11 rebounds to her totals as well.

Santa Clara remains returns to action on the road, with visits to Gonzaga and Portland next weekend.
