IRVINE, Calif. – Santa Clara men's water polo extended its winning streak with a conference road victory.
Mac Carey posted a career-high tying six goals and four assists, and Luca Pagano, Patrick Kirk, and Shane Hughes each scored twice for the Broncos (10-9, 2-2) who have won six of their last seven, including five straight, after downing Concordia, 14-11, on Thursday.
Messan Moore posted three goals and Patrick Zsiros scored twice for the Eagles (5-15, 1-4) who were held to two goals in the first 15 minutes of the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) contest.
Concordia's Christian Bowley had the first goal of the game, but Carey quickly scored twice and the Broncos, who moved to No. 15 in the national ranking this week, never trailed the remainder of the game.
Carey and Hughes each scored early in the second quarter, and Ryan Werner and Pagano had goals shortly before halftime to increase the lead to 8-2.
Sean Tehaney secured the win in net for the Broncos by turning aside 13 shots, his third-straight contest with double-digit blocks.
The Eagles scored three late goals, but the Broncos had built a lead of 13-7 midway through the fourth quarter on an exclusion goal by Hughes.
Each team was 3-for-8 with the man advantage and Concordia scored on its lone penalty shot.
• Sam Toriggino, Patrick Kirk, Reilley May, Dane Estrella, Shane Hughes and Mac Carey have started all 19 games. Sean Tehaney made his 10th-straight start in net.
• Carey now has 45 goals on the season, including 14 in the last three games. His season assist total is now 33, including 18 during the last six contests.
• Tehaney is averaging 13.7 blocks over the last three games.
Santa Clara plays its final regular-season road contest on Saturday at noon when it faces California Baptist (17-9, 2-1), which is third in the WWPA standings.
