FRESNO, Calif. – Sam Toriggino matched his career-high with three goals, including the game-winner, Mac Carey scored twice and posted three assists, and Dane Estrella dished out a career-best four assists to lead Santa Clara men's water polo to an 11-9 victory over Fresno Pacific in a back-and-forth Western Water Polo Association contest on Wednesday.
Lazar Raca registered three goals for the Sunbirds (4-12, 0-4) who scored just once in nine chances with the man advantage and had their four-game winning streak snapped.
Patrick Kirk had two goals and one assist and Estrella recorded five steals for the Broncos (4-6, 1-2).
Carey's second goal gave the Broncos a 5-2 lead late in the second quarter, but the Sunbirds scored the next five.
Fresno Pacific led 8-6 after Uros Pelemis scored just 26 seconds into the fourth, but Toriggino started the final rally. He scored on the power play 27 seconds later and the eventual game-winner on a feed from Carey with 2:08 on the clock. Kirk's goal on the team's next possession increased the lead to 11-8.
Sean Tehaney posted seven blocks to record his first win in net.
Josh Ramage suffered the loss for the Sunbirds, but was credited with 13 saves.
• Sam Toriggino, Patrick Kirk, Reilley May, Dane Estrella, Shane Hughes and Mac Carey have started all 10 games. Sean Tehaney made his second-career start in net.
• Carey has a team-best 24 goals and has scored at least twice in seven games this season.
• Estrella leads the team with 18 steals, with 17 occurring in the last five games.
• Hughes scored twice and had one assist. He has at least one assist in nine games this season.
The Broncos begin play in the Mountain Pacific Invitational on Friday with a matchup against second-ranked UCLA. Santa Clara will play four games in the three-day event that is being held at Stanford.
