CLAREMONT, Calif. – Santa Clara men's tennis lost to No. 30 San Diego, 4-1 in the West Coast Conference Tournament championship match on Saturday as the Toreros claimed its sixth straight crown.
After dropping the doubles point, Santa Clara (17-8) evened the match at 1-1 on Santiago Hinojosa's straight-set win over Pratt Keerasuntonpong, 6-2, 6-2 on court six. It was the freshman's third singles win in as many days to help him earn a place on the WCC All-Tournament Team.
With the score tied at 1-all, San Diego (20-4) reeled off three straight victories on courts two, one and five including David Norfeldt's match clinching win over Robert Seby, 6-2, 6-4.
The Toreros recorded a pair of convincing doubles victories to kick start the day.
The No. 51-ranked doubles team of Joel Gamerov and August Holmgren took down Andrew Gu and Robert Seby, 6-0 on court one.
Gui Osorio and Nico Borter followed with a 6-3 win over Jesus Tapiador Barajas and Arthur Neuhaus, to pick up the doubles point.
In singles action, Holmgren, ranked No. 110 nationally, beat Tapiador Barajas to put the Toreros up 2-1 followed by No. 59 Osorio's win over Gu, 7-6 (7-2), 6-1 before Norfeldt's clincher.
Three Broncos were represented on the WCC All-Tournament Team.
The doubles team of Kamran Khan and Vasileios Iliopoulos who won its matches at court three in the opening round and the semifinals were named to the WCC All-Tournament Team.
Iliopoulos also took home the No. 4 single honors along with Hinojosa at No. 6. Iliopoulos won twice on Thursday and Friday.
