SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The 10th Annual Bronco Pro-Am Invitational was held Sunday, June 10 at the Degheri Tennis Center. Current and former Bronco players and coaches joined alumni, family and friends of the program for a round-robin doubles tournament. Funds raised by the event were earmarked towards the Broncos' summer recruiting efforts.

"Today was another success of the season," said current head coach George Husack. "The matches were rather competitive and challenging as we tested out a new format. In the end, everyone earned their keep and a hearty meal."

The tournament featured six rounds of matches, as well as a semifinal and final round. Former All-WCC performer and assistant coach Erich Chen '05 teamed with junior Blane Shields to capture the crown. The pair saved one match point and defeated former Bronco coach Cliff Barrett ('83-87) and sophomore Brian Brogan 11-9 in the supertiebreaker final.

Brogan and Barrett reached the championship round by defeating 2007 Bronco Fan of the Year Jerry Lu and defending Pro-Am champ Kenzo Hirakawa-Wong in the semifinals. Chen and Shields advanced after squeaking by current women's coach Ben Cabell and the "Mad Dog", Scott Watters '00.

"This is one of my favorite events of the year as it allows our guys to get a good taste of Bronco tennis history and tradition," said Husack. "It's a wonderful way for family and friends to join our tight-knit community and experience what our program is all about."

The Broncos wrap up their school year this week with final exams before their summer break begins.
