Broncos Win Third Straight On The Road With 4-1 Win Over Cal Poly

March 11, 2007

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The road continued to be kind to the No. 59 Santa Clara men's tennis team on Sunday afternoon. The Broncos won their first ever match on the road against Cal Poly, beating the Mustangs 4-1 in front of a big crowd at Mustang Courts. Jan Macek and Bobby Rasmussen clinched the doubles point with a clutch performance at No. 1, while Macek, Rasmussen and Blane Shields won their singles matches.

The doubles lineup saw some changes on Sunday as Robert Gallman did not make the trip due to illness. With Gallman out, Kevin McQuaid teamed once again with Shields and they won at No. 2, beating Nick Berger and Fred Dewitte 8-5. Jay Wong joined Brian Brogan at No. 3, but the pair fell in a tight 8-6 match to Robert Foy and Darryn Young. In the deciding match, Macek and Rasmussen quickly fell behind a break to Matt Baca and Kyle Roybal. However, the Broncos top doubles pair broke back at 4-5 and then got into a tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, Macek and Rasmussen staved off one match point before pulling out an 11-9 win.

With the doubles point in hand, the Broncos silenced the partisan crowd and headed into the singles matches with a big boost of confidence.

Macek kept the momentum going with a dominating 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1 over Darryn Young. Shields remained perfect on the year with his fifth win in a row in singles by knocking off Nick Berger 6-2, 6-4 in the sixth position.

Jay Wong had his impressive eight-match winning streak broken with a straight sets loss to Matt Baca in the two-spot. However, Rasmussen ended any drama with his sixth straight victory. He defeated Kyle Roybal 6-1, 6-4 to clinch the match. Rasmussen has now clinched two matches in a row and five overall this season. The final two matches of the day were called following Rasmussen's victory leaving the final score at 4-1.

SCU now enjoys a long break before taking on Cornell on March 23 at the Degheri Tennis Center. That match begins at 1:30 p.m. PT.
