Third-Ranked Men's Soccer Remains Undefeated with 3-0 Win over Davidson

Sept. 19, 2004

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The third-ranked Santa Clara men's soccer team scored three goals in the first half as the Broncos defeated Davidson College, 3-0 in the finale of the adidas Classic. With a perfect 2-0 record and the most goals scored in the tournament, SCU picked up its third tournament title in as many tries as it improved to 6-0-0 on the season.

Defender Ryan Purtell was named the 2004 adidas Classic Most Valuable Player after anchoring a Bronco defense that allowed only one goal in 180 minutes of play over the weekend. Will Weatherly, Medhi Ballouchy and Eric Irvine were also named to the All-Classic team. The honor marks the third straight all-tournament team for Ballouchy, who earned MVP recognition at the diadora Classic and GMU/Comfort Inn Classic.

The high-powered Bronco offense, which has scored 15 goals in six matches this season, scored all three of its goals within 22 minutes of each other. Forward Eric Irvine started the scoring run in the 15th minute when he scored off a rebound from Peter Lowry's shot. The goal was the first on the season for Irvine.

Senior captain Will Weatherly gave SCU a 2-0 advantage less than 12 minutes later. The Bellevue, Wash. native beat Davidson goalkeeper Bart Creasman after receiving a pass from Medhi Ballouchy to put the ball in the back of the net.

Forward Keith DeVey capped the Bronco's scoring almost ten minutes later pushing the ball past the keeper and into the lower left corner of the net. Midfielder Erik Ustruck assisted on the goal.

In Saturday's first match of the adidas Classic, West Coast Conference foe San Francisco posted a 2-1 victory over San Jose State. All-Classic selection Aaron Chandler scored both Don goals to finish the adidas Classic with four goals in two matches.

Next weekend, the Broncos will face-off with Bay Area schools Stanford and California in the Stanford Invitational. On Friday night, SCU will take-on Stanford at 7:00 p.m. before hosting the Golden Bears on Sunday night at 7:00 p.m.
