Men's Soccer To Host Santa Clara Community Day

July 29, 2004

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The NCAA semifinalist Santa Clara University men's soccer team will celebrate the third annual Santa Clara Community Day on Thursday, September 16 when the nationally-ranked Broncos open their home season against rival San Jose State at Buck Shaw Stadium.

The match is the second of a doubleheader on the first day of the annual adidas Classic, which features the University of San Francisco against Davidson College in the first match at 5 p.m. The Broncos versus Spartans Rivalry Series clash will kickoff at approximately 7:30 p.m.

The Broncos are honoring the local community and asking fans to join local businesses and community organizations for an evening of Bronco Spirit, as the Santa Clara Athletic Department recognizes the 2003 College Cup semifinalists and attempts to break the Buck Shaw attendance record for men's soccer. The current mark for a regular season home match was set November 18, 1989, when 4,715 fans attended the Broncos' match against Fresno State.

Sponsored by the Bank of Santa Clara and the Santa Clara Chamber of Commerce and Convention-Visitors Bureau, Santa Clara residents will be able to purchase tickets for half price off an adult admission for only $3.50 with a valid proof of residency, including a driver's license or utility bill.

"The Santa Clara community has been very support of not only our program, but the sport of soccer as well," said head coach Cameron Rast, who played for the Broncos' 1989 national championship squad and has been a part of Bronco soccer since 1988. "The first home match of the season is always special, but with such a great rivalry match to open the season at home, September 16 should be a most exciting night. We certainly appreciate the efforts of the Bank of Santa Clara and the Santa Clara Chamber of Commerce and Convention-Visitors Bureau to help make this a memorable evening for everyone."

In addition to watching some of the top collegiate soccer in the country, the evening will also feature a pregame community fair and fan festival featuring local businesses and community organizations. Santa Clara players and coaches will also be available for a post-match autograph session and a number of interactive promotions are planned.

As they have for the past two seasons, local organizations can also become involved in this event. Contact Daniel Galvin for more information at or 408-554-4690.

Tickets will be available in advance online by Clicking Here or by calling the Ticket Office at 408-554-4660. They will also be available at the gate.
