Box Score

STANFORD, Calif. - The 22nd-ranked Santa Clara University men's soccer squad suffered its first shutout of the season Sunday afternoon at Maloney Field, falling to No. 1 Stanford by a score of 3-0.

The first half time of possession and pace of play was dominated by the Broncos (4-3-0) who put constant pressure on the Cardinal (9-1-0) whose defense stepped up big. After getting off two shots in the first half, of which one forced Stanford's netminder Robby Fulton to make a save, the Broncos came out a little flat in the second stanza.

The Cardinal began putting more pressure on Santa Clara as the second half progressed. They eventually broke through in the 58th minute when Darren Fernandez had a ball slip across the field, through the defense to his awaiting feet where he hammered home the game's first goal of passes from Matt Janusz and James Twellman.

Santa Clara goalkeeper Steve Cronin was again tested just two minutes later when Roger Levesque fired a shot from 15 yards out that Cronin deflected, but the ball his the crossbar and ricocheted off Cronin's back an into the goal for a 2-0 Stanford lead.

The Cardinal scored their final goal of the match in the 68th minute when Twellman took a centering pass from Levesque and slid it past Cronin for the 3-0 lead.

Santa Clara did not give up however, continuing to put pressure on the Stanford defense over the final 22 minutes, the Broncos ended up outshooting the Cardinal by a 9-7 margin, having one shot bounce of the crossbar and two more sail just high during that span.

The Broncos return to play next weekend at the USF/Diadora Classic where they will take on Brown University on Friday evening and Harvard University Sunday afternoon. The meeting between Santa Clara and its two Ivy League opponents will both be the first time the two schools have met in men's soccer.
