U.S. Under-20s Stay Perfect in 2002 with 2-1 Win in Gaudalajara

March 11, 2002

GUADALAJARA, Mexico - The U.S. Under-20 Men's National Team kept their 2002 record perfect with a 2-1 win over 2nd Division Mexican club side Gallos de Jalisco on Monday at the Club Deportiva on the Universidad de Guadalajara campus.

Knox Cameron scored in the game's second minute, before Gallos equalized in the 39th minute. Dallas Burn striker Ed Johnson, who scored six goals during the Burn's preseason tour of Chile, scored the gamewinner in the 48th minute. The goal was Johnson's second of the year with the Under-20s.

Gallos' goalkeeper came up with six big saves to keep the match close, as the USA outshot the Mexican side 10-6. Steve Cronin made three saves for the U.S. on his way to picking up his fourth win of the young year.

The U.S. Under-20s will play two more matches while in Mexico, facing a Jalisco Select Team that will resemble a Mexican 'B" Youth National Team on March 13 and March 15. The select team is scheduled to include many of Mexico's Youth National Team players, as well as up-and-coming stars from the surrounding Mexican states.

The U.S. Under-20s posted four wins in Chula Vista, Calif., in January during their first action of 2002, including a 1-0 win over Canada's Under-20s. The U.S. did not allow a single goal in their first four games, with forward Mike Magee pacing the way with five goals. Magee had to withdraw from the trip to Mexico after picking up a slight injury.

The Under-20s are scheduled to regroup at the end of April for a short training camp in Chula Vista, Calif. Following is a game report from the match against Gallos de Jalisco and the roster for the 19 players in the current camp:
