Broncos Drop Men's Soccer Match to UMKC

Sept. 21, 2000

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Despite outshooting the Kangaroos by a 21-6 margin, the Santa Clara men's soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to the University of Missouri-Kansas City in the second game of the Santa Clara adidas Classic Thursday at Buck Shaw Stadium.

UMKC scored twice in the first half, once on a Tony Avery shot off a rebound in front of the goal. The second goal for the Kangaroos was on an own goal by Santa Clara to give UMKC a 2-0 halftime edge.

"Certainly this was a disappointing loss for us," said Santa Clara head coach Mitch Murray. "I think our guys came in overconfident. I think we have been working hard and playing bettter. But, I think we came in looking at the other team's record and the fact that we were playing at home. We really played well to start the game and I think our guys lost their concentration and intensity after that. We have a really young team and we need to learn how to handle these tough situations. This is a hard lesson and I hope we grow from it.

"Cal is going to come in here Saturday trying to salvage their season and is going to give us a tough match. We are going to have to rebound quickly and play well."

Anthony Chimienti (San Jose, Calif.) scored Santa Clara's only goal of the match. After a Bronco throw-in, Jamil Walker (Pittsford, N.Y.) passed the ball in front of the goal to an open Chimienti who powered a low shot into the near side of the goal.

The match featured a combined four yellow cards and 38 fouls as well as a red card given to UMKC's Larry Scheller. The Kangaroos played a man down for the final 13:12 of the match.

UMKC's Scott Twellman left the game and was taken to the hospital after suffering a blow to the ribs with 4:15 left in the first half. He did not return to the game.
