Mehl Takes 4th; Men's Golf Ties For 5th At WCC Championships

VALLEJO, Calif. - Freshman Cory Mehl finished fourth overall as the Santa Clara men's golf team tied for fifth place at the 2009 West Coast Conference Championships at Hiddenbrooke Golf Course in Vallejo, Calif.

The team title went to San Francisco. The Dons finished two-under par 862. Greg Moss of Loyola Marymount was the individual medalist. He finished seven-under par 209 with rounds of 67-68-74. As a team, the Lions finished second at one-under par 863.

The Broncos posted a final team score of 873 (+9). They tied with the Bulldogs of Gonzaga.

Mehl compiled his highest finish of the season going three-under par 313 with scores of 72-69-72. The Seattle, Wash., native also shot his career-best low round of 69 in the second 18. The previous best two Bronco finishes were by Steve Lee and Drew Corwin in 1998 and 2000, respectively. They both finished second at the conference tournament.

Junior Jimmy Cacho produced his third top-10 finish of the season as he tied for eighth. Cacho shot 215 (-1) for the tournament with rounds of 73-69-73. Fellow junior Alex Bon tied for 27th at 10-over par 226 (80-68-78). He had the team-best low round in the second 18 with a 68.

Freshman Ronnald Monaco tied for 32nd place at 12-over par 228 (74-75-79), while senior Jonathan Keane tied for 36th with a score of 231 (+15/74-81-76).
