CHANDLER, Ariz. – A final-round 291 cost Santa Clara men's golf a spot on the leaderboard, dropping the Broncos into a fifth-place finish at the 20-team Wyoming Cowboy Classic with an 8-under 856 total.
The Broncos entered Tuesday seven shots behind eventual champion No. 39 UCLA and scored 3-over for the day, their worst score of the three-round event.
"We got off to a rough start," head coach Rob Miller said. "We were behind the eight-ball early and never recovered."
The Broncos got a strong tournament from freshman Konrad Brauckmeyer, who carded a career-low 67 in Monday's second-round and was 2-under 70 on Tuesday for a personal-best 54-hole total of 7-under 209. He earned his first career top-10 by grabbing a share of sixth-place.
"Heck of a tournament for Konrad," Miller said of his first-year player. "That's a confidence-builder and gives us a legitimate top of the lineup. It's great to see his game come together."
Entering the day one-shot off the lead, junior Matt McCarty carded a final-round 76 to drop into a tie for 20th at 3-under 213.
Senior Derek Ackerman shot 2-over 74 to finish tied for 51st at 3-over 219.
"Overall I'm not worried about Matt and Derek," Miller said of his top two players.
Competing as an individual, sophomore Zack Kaneshiro's final-round 74 left him tied for 37th at 1-over 217.
The Broncos will head directly to Indiana where they will compete in the Purdue Boilermaker Invitational this weekend.
