SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Powered by a runner-up finish from junior Matt McCarty, Santa Clara men's golf grabbed its second podium finish in three spring events, overtaking No. 28 BYU to finish third with an 862 total at the Olympic Club Intercollegiate.
McCarty earned his fifth career top-5 by finishing at 3-under 210, tied with second-round leader Derek Castillo and just one shot behind medalist Sam Meek of Nevada.
Competing as an individual, Avrit carded a final-round 2-under 69 to earn his best finish as a Bronco, sharing seventh-place at 1-under 212. "Jack signed an incorrect scorecard yesterday that cost him a stroke," head coach Rob Miller said. "He played well enough to finish tied for fourth."
Ackerman put together back-to-back rounds of 1-under 70 so sneak into a share of ninth-place at 1-over 214.
"It was nice to see Matt at the top of the leaderboard and Derek played well the last two rounds," Miller said of his veteran players.
Berk Harvey shot a final round 75 to finish tied for 20th at 6-over 219. Freshman Konrad Brauckmeyer overcame a first-round 77 to shoot 3-over across the final 36 holes. He placed in a tie for 30th at 9-over 222. Will Del Biaggio totaled 228 to grab a share of 50th.
"It's nice to get moving in the right direction heading into our biggest event of the season," Miller concluded. "Hopefully the momentum will carry over to Stanford."
The Broncos will tee it up next on March 28 in the first round of the prestigious Stanford Invitational on the Stanford Golf Course.
