PALM DESERT, Calif. – Santa Clara men's golf scored a final-round 296 to finish the 21-team Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate in 12th place with an 896 total.
Senior Derek Ackerman and junior Matt McCarty both carded a 1-under 71 on Sunday to pace the team. Ackerman rebounded from an opening round 80 to play the final 36 holes at 1-under. McCarty birdied five of his last seven holes on Sunday to make a late charge.
The two jumped up the leaderboard after an uneven start to the tournament, ending in a tie for 41st along with freshman Konrad Brauckmeyer and six other golfers at 7-over 223.
"Yesterday and today we played well, but we threw our rounds away on the last few holes," head coach Rob Miller said. "We didn't finish strong. Take 13-14 strokes off our total and we're right there among the top five."
Playing as an individual sophomore Berk Harvey was Santa Clara's top individual finisher. With a final-round 74, Harvey ended at 5-over 221 to grab a share of 29th.
"I'm going to play all of them as individuals next time out," Miller joked about his squad.
"We're young," Miller added. "Guys are getting experience, but we're struggling for consistency. We had a rough start, nothing went well in the first round and it put us in a hole. It is who we are right now."
No. 18 Texas Tech claimed the team title by 1-shot with Boise State's Skyler Eubank the individual medalist with a 9-under 207.
The Broncos are back in action on Mar. 11 competing in the USF Invitational at the Olympic Club in San Francisco.
