SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara men's golf opens a busy spring season with the first of seven scheduled tournaments Monday at the UC Irvine Anteater Invitational. The 10-team field will attack the 7,024-yard, par-72 Big Canyon Country Club course over two days.
"This is a good tournament to get back in competitive mode," head coach Rob Miller said. "The events get tougher leading up to a huge event at Stanford in late March."
Led by junior Matt McCarty, the Broncos finished among the top-six in three of their four fall events to earn a ranking of 81 on the Golfstat.com poll. The Broncos are the highest ranked team among the field with UC Santa Barbara (84) and Cal State Fullerton (87) close behind.
Other schools competing include tournament host UC Irvine, Seattle, Grand Canyon, Washington State, Cal Poly, Central Arkansas and Cal State Northridge.
"This is a small event with only 10 teams participating," Miller added. "The guys have been motivated and are working hard to make sure we don't miss a beat."
McCarty topped the squad with a 70.09 stroke average and three top-10 showings in the fall. He'll be joined on the five-player team by senior Derek Ackerman, freshman Konrad Brauckmeyer, sophomore Zack Kaneshiro and junior Will Del Biaggio. Sophomores Berk Harvey and Jack Avrit will compete as individuals.
Along with McCarty and freshman Nordin van Tilburg, Ackerman was the only player to compete in all four fall events compiling a 73.42 stroke average with four sub-par rounds.
Over the next 11 weeks the Broncos will span the state of California along with stops in Arizona and West Lafayette, Ind. The season concludes at the end of April in the WCC Championship.
First round action at the Anteater Invitational will start from the first and 10th tee box beginning at 7:30 a.m. PT. score updates from the track will be available at Golfstat.com.
