FAIRFAX, Calif. – Junior Matt McCarty fired a career-low 10-under 61 in Monday's second-round entering the clubhouse tied for third just two-shots off the lead with a 131 total after the first day of competition at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational. Santa Clara men's golf scored an 8-under 276 over the second 18 holes and holds down ninth-place in the 15-team event with a 564 total.
McCarty eagled the par-5 15th hole and collected eight birdies en route to the day's lowest score. He bested his own personal-best round by four shots.
"Heck of a round for Matt," head coach Rob Miller said. "He had two birdie putts lip out or he could've shot a 59. He saved us to put us in the middle of the pack."
After an opening-round 1-under 70, McCarty moved up 18 spots on the individual leaderboard with his blistering play in the second round. Cal's Collin Morikawa has the lead after 36 holes with a 13-under 129. His teammate Sebastian Crampton is second at 130.
As a team the Broncos shot 8-under in the second-round but failed to move up the leaderboard following their opening round 288. "I thought we had a good second-round but it was only the 10th best. That shows you how the course plays," Miller added.
The Broncos had just two other below-par rounds besides McCarty's. Senior Derek Ackerman shot a first-round 1-under 70 and ended the day with a 74 to place in a tie for 47th at 144. Freshman Konrad Brauckmeyer had a second-round 2-under 69 after opening with a 77. He's tied for 62nd at 146.
"Konrad had a good second round, which was nice to see," Miller noted. "He really helped the team score."
"The greens are challenging and we didn't do very well today," Miller added. "There are five teams ahead of us within reach and we need to pick off a few of them. If we get up to the top six I'd be happy," Miller exclaimed.
Final round action is schedule to get underway at 7:40 a.m. PT on Tuesday. Live scoring is available at Golfstat.com.
