TOLEDO, Ohio – Heavy late afternoon rain fall suspended the second round of the Inverness Intercollegiate with Santa Clara men's golf locked in a fourth-place tie with Butler after 32 holes on Monday. Rain is in the forecast for tomorrow and tournament officials will attempt to get two rounds completed to make it an official event.
"It doesn't look promising," head coach Rob Miller said of the field completing three rounds. "It's a tough track out there, especially in this weather. Based on where we are in the standings we would like to finish two rounds to make this official."
Led by a 2-under 69 from junior Matt McCarty and an even-par 71 from sophomore Berk Harvey, the Broncos carded a first-round 293 to finish the opening 18 holes tied for third at 9-over. The Broncos slipped in the later stages of the second round before play was halted.
"We're not used to the rain in California," Miller quipped. "We stumbled near the end of the second round when it started to come down pretty good."
The Broncos dropped to 17-over, tied with Butler for fourth-place. Tennessee has a 10-shot lead over Virginia for the top spot with San Francisco 3-strokes ahead of the Broncos and Bulldogs.
McCarty and senior Derek Ackerman ended the day tied for 11th-place at 3-over with Harvey 2-shots back tied for 18th. All second round figures are unofficial since the round was incomplete.
Weather permitting play will resume Tuesday morning at 8:30 a.m. ET (5:30 a.m. PT). Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
