DRIGGS, Idaho – Darkness caught up with the field during the first day of the Showdown in the Rockies, leaving several players and three of the 10 teams with incomplete scores. Those players will finish their second round Tuesday morning prior to the start of final round play.
Santa Clara men's golf finished its two rounds, compiling a score of 5-over 581 to place in a tie for sixth. Tournament host Utah leads the pack at 557 with Oregon State (566) and Texas Tech (567) at the top of the team leaderboard.
"We played well most of the day," head coach Rob Miller said. "The last five holes of the first round kind of messed us up, otherwise we were at the top of the heap." The Broncos carded a first-round 292 and improved by three strokes in the second-round.
Matt McCarty was the Broncos top individual, ending the day tied for fourth-place with a trio of golfers at 4-under 140. The junior scored a first-round 5-under 67 before shooting a 73 over the middle 18 holes. He's five shots behind leader Spencer Tibbits of Oregon State, who sits at 9-under with one hole remaining to be played in his second round.
Freshman Nordin van Tilburg had an impressive collegiate debut scoring below par in each round to place in a tie for eighth-place at 3-under 141.
"Matt played solid golf and Nordin was really good in his first tournament," Miller said.
Derek Ackerman (77-71) and Zack Kaneshiro (78-74) both improved their second round scores much to the delight of Miller. "They both had good bounce back rounds to help the team," the coach acknowledged.
"We have a chance to move up to the top half of the field tomorrow and that's what we're going for," Miller said of Tuesday's final round.
Final round play is scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. PT. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
