EUGENE, Ore. – Getting contributions from its entire roster, Santa Clara men's golf took a 1-shot lead after two rounds of the Duck Invitational with a 579 team total, one-shot better than the Northwest schools host Oregon and Oregon State, and Liberty.
"It's nice to be at the top even if it is just by one shot," head coach Rob Miller said. "It was a good day for the guys. I think some of the momentum we built carried over from Bandon."
Sophomore Matt McCarty scored a first-round 3-under 68, but his second-round 76 wasn't even counted in the team score. McCarty finished the day in 13th place at 2-over 144.
Senior Hayden Shieh had Santa Clara's low score of the day with a second-round 4-under 67 that propelled him into a fifth-place tie at 1-under 141. Junior Derek Ackerman carded a second-round even-par 71 to enter the clubhouse tied for 14th at 3-over 145.
"Everybody helped out," Miller said of his team. "We had solid play from our top three and we got contributions from everyone. That's the difference between being in first and not being in first."
"It was good to see Zack come back and have a good second round," Miller said. "And Boots didn't play his best, but we needed his scores."
Miller knows it will be a battle in Tuesday's final round. "You expect Oregon to go off tomorrow on their home course. But we can't worry about them. We just have to play our game."
Final round play begins with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Live scoring is available at Golfstat.com.
