BANDON, Ore. – Sophomore Matt McCarty tied for fifth with a 7-under 206 and Santa Clara men's golf dropped a few spots on the leaderboard to claim a fifth-place finish at the Bandon Dunes Championship with an 845 total.
Entering the day in third-place after scoring a tournament-low 273 in Monday's second round, the Broncos shot a final-round 2-over 286 Tuesday, falling behind Washington State and Clemson into fifth on the team leaderboard. Arizona State claimed the title with an 824 total
"Not our best today," head coach Rob Miller said. "The result isn't going to hurt us rankings-wise and overall I think we held our own. In a tournament like this, however, it (result) could've been better."
McCarty shot a final-round 2-under 69 and scored all three rounds below par to equal his 54-hole career-low score. He finished tied with Denver's Chris Korte, six-shots behind individual medalist Chun An Yu of Arizona State.
"Matt had a great tournament," Miller added. "A top-5 finish for him is cool."
Two other Broncos finished among the top-15 in the 84-player field.
Senior Hayden Shieh dropped into a tie for 13th at 2-under 211 after his final-round 74. Junior Derek Ackerman shot even-par 71 on Tuesday to earn his fourth top-20 of the season. He tied for 15th at 1-under 212.
Sophomore Will DelBiaggio shot even-par over the last two rounds, ending the tournament tied for 41st at 5-over 218.
"Boots has been solid for us," Miller explained. "But we need a fifth player who can contribute."
After scuffling with a second-round 82, freshman Jack Avrit regrouped to shoot a final-round 75, ending the event at 231.
The Broncos return to action on Mar. 26 competing in the Duck Invitational at the Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore.
