BANDON, Ore. – Santa Clara men's golf carded the lowest score of the day and their second-lowest of the season with a second-round 11-under 273 to climb into third-place with a 559 total after two-rounds of the Bandon Dunes Championship.
The Broncos were able to navigate the last several holes with better results today and it showed in the team score.
"It's nice to finally finish off a round," head coach Rob Miller said. "We were 8-over on the last six, seven holes yesterday. Today we were 6-under. Those strokes made the difference. It was a lot more fun to watch today."
The Broncos are 8-shots behind second-round leader Arizona State and three behind second-place Utah heading into Tuesday's final round.
Senior Hayden Shieh topped the field with a second-round 6-under 65, matching the tournament-low round, and sophomore Matt McCarty was at 3-under 68. The two are tied for fifth entering Tuesday's final round at 5-under 137, four shots back of leader Chun An Yu of Arizona State.
"It was nice to see Hayden back," Miller noted. "That was his best round in quite a while. He and Matt played awesome golf."
All four second-round counting scores were below par with Derek Ackerman and Will DelBiaggio each carding a 1-under 70. Ackerman is tied for 18th at 1-under 141 while DelBiaggio is tied for 45th at 4-over 146.
"Derek is playing solid golf and we needed Boots (DelBiaggio) today with Jack struggling a bit."
Freshman Jack Avrit carded a second-round 82 for a 156 total.
Final round play is set to begin at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun format. Live scoring is available at Golfstat.com.
