Men's Basketball Finishes Season-Opening, Two-Game Homestand Thursday

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara men's basketball will close out a two-game, season-opening homestand on Thursday when UC Irvine visits Leavey Center.

Tipoff between the Broncos (0-1) and Anteaters (3-0) is set for 7 p.m.

UC Irvine, which plays in the Big West Conference, defeated Life Pacific, 87-53, at home on Monday, which came after an impressive 74-73 road win against Texas A&M.

Cold shooting and turnovers helped send the Broncos to a season-opening 81-64 loss to Prairie View A&M on Friday.

This season, the Broncos feature a new-look roster.

Guard KJ Feagin, and forwards Henrik Jadersten and Josip Vrankic are the only returning rotational players. Feagin, a three-year starter, is a two-time All-West Coast Conference selection who averaged 17.5 points per game (fifth in the league) and 4.0 assists pg (ninth in the league) in 2017-18. Jadersten has appeared in 84 career games and Vrankic was one of the more productive freshmen in the WCC during 2017-18, ranking third on the team in both scoring (10.4 ppg) and rebounding (4.6 pg).

Sophomore guard Tahj Eaddy is eligible this season after sitting out 2017-18. He transferred from Southeast Missouri last summer.

There are eight additions to the 2018-19 squad, including five true freshmen in Guglielmo Caruso (Naples, Italy), Juan Ducasse (Montevideo, Uruguay), Keshawn Justice (Madison, Wisconsin), Zeke Richards (Oak Park, California) and Trey Wertz (Charlotte, North Carolina). Fallou Ndoye, DJ Mitchell and Josh Martin are transfers. Ndoye (CSU Bakersfield) and Martin (Cal Poly) are graduate transfers with immediate eligibility. Mitchell played the last two seasons at Wake Forest and will sit out 2018-19.

KJ Feagin landed on the 2018-19 preseason All-West Coast Conference team. One of 10 players voted to the squad by the league's coaches, Feagin was a first team All-WCC selection last season when he started all 31 games, averaging 17.5 ppg (fifth in the WCC) and 4.0 assists pg (ninth in the WCC). He led the WCC in free-throw percentage (86.8), the sixth-best single-season mark in school history. Feagin earned second team All-WCC in 2016-17 and was on the all-freshman team one season earlier.

Dating to last season, the Anteaters, led by ninth-year head coach Russell Turner, have won six straight road games, tied for the third-longest streak in the nation. UCI is shooting 53.8 percent from the floor, including 40.7 percent from behind the 3-point line. Junior Max Hazzard is averaging a team-high 12.3 points per game and tied a career-high five 3-pointers against Texas A&M on Friday. Eyassu Worku (11.7) and Robert Cartwright (11.3) are also averaging double figures in scoring.

Juan Ducasse and Henrik Jadersten are both out of action with injuries. Ducasse will miss 2018-19 after having knee surgery in August. Jadersten suffered a stress fracture in his foot in the preseason and has recently started practicing.

The Broncos have two new assistant coaches with Scott Garson and Ryan Madry joining the staff this spring. Garson spent the last five seasons as head coach at College of Idaho. Madry was at Seattle last season after six years as an assistant coach at UC Santa Barbara.

Anthony Passarelli (play-by-play) and John Stege (analyst) will call the action during the season on radio and through at home. All Broncos home games and West Coast Conference contests (not on an ESPN platform or BYUtv) will also be streamed through (local blackout restrictions apply for games broadcast over the air). This season at least 25 games will air on KDOW-AM 1220 or KTRB-AM 860 this season. Thursday's game will air on KDOW-AM 1220. View the 2018-19 schedule for broadcast outlets.
