Bronco Baseball Faces Four Nationally Recognized Opponents At Aztec Invitational

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara baseball team travels south this weekend to face four nationally recognized programs at the 2008 San Diego State Tournament. The Broncos being the tournament with the No. 11/17 Toreros of San Diego in a non-conference contest on Thursday, March 6. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. SCU then faces San Diego State, who began the season ranked and are currently receiving votes in all major polls, on Friday at 6 p.m.

The Broncos then battle the No. 21/22 Cowboys of Oklahoma State on Saturday at 3 p.m. and finish the weekend against two-time defending National Champions No. 12/15 Oregon State on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Last Time Out For The Broncos
►SCU ride a two-game win streak going into this weekend after defeating Fresno State Tuesday night at Schott Stadium.

►In their first extra innings game of the season, Santa Clara posted a five-run seventh inning to take control of the ball game. However, Fresno State tied things up in the top of the ninth inning. A walk handed to Patrick Glenn with bases loaded in the bottom of the tenth sent Tommy Medica home to end the game.

On The Season
► The Broncos are off to an early 7-1 start to the 2008 season. Leading the team offensively after the first three games is junior Evan LeBlanc. Over the weekend he started in all eight games for the Broncos and has batted .500 with eight runs, five doubles, two home run and 11 RBIs.

►Donald Brandt and Nate Garcia has both registered two wins for the Broncos in starting positions, while Thain Simon has tallied two wins in relief and Alex Rivers has compiled two saves.

► The 2008 campaign begins three weeks later and will last for just 13 weeks (instead of 16 weeks as in years past). The Broncos will play their typical 56 game schedule during that time with 32 of those games being held in the friendly and comfortable confines of Stephen Schott Stadium.

Bronco Baseball Wins 2008 Rivalry Series
► The baseball team increased its record in the annual Rivalry Series to 4-2 last week as the Broncos went 2-1 against the Spartans.

Scouting San Diego
► The Toreros enter Thursday with a 5-5 record and are 4-2 at home. In their last outing, USD was shutout, 4-0, by UC Irvine. On the season, Josh Romanski leads the squad hitting .343 with seven runs and 10 RBIs. He's also had three home runs thus far for the Toreros. However, the Broncos will face Romanski on the mound Thursday afternoon. As a pitcher, he has a 6.55 ERA and a 1-0 record. He's allowed eight runs, yet leads the team with 17 batters struck out.

All-Time vs. San Diego
► Thursday's meeting will be a taste of West Coast Conference action to come as the team's meet in a friendly non-league contest. In the all-time series, Santa Clara owns a 49-43 record.

Scouting San Diego State
►The Aztecs enter the weekend with a 6-4 overall record. SDSU has gone 4-3 at home. The Aztecs have utilized their depth already as only four players have started in all 10 contests. Leading that group is Troy Hanzawa who bats .500 with 13 runs and nine RBIs. He is also 3-for-4 on stolen bases. The Broncos will face Stephen Strasburg on the mound. Strasburg is 1-0 on the season and owns a 3.86 ERA. He's pitched 14.0 innings thus far allowing six runs in 51 batters faced.

All-Time vs. San Diego State
► Friday's contest will be the 21st meeting of the two programs with Santa Clara leading the all-time series 11-9-0. Last season, the Aztecs swept the Broncos 3-0 at home.

Scouting Oklahoma State
► The Cowboys enter the weekend with a 7-1 overall record. OK-State had a few more days of rest due to travel out to the West Coast and in their last outing defeated South Florida, 14-3. Only four Cowboys have started in all eight games this season and leading the way is Matt Hague. He hits .471 with 11 runs, five doubles and 11 RBIs. It has not been announced who the Broncos will face on the mound.

All-Time vs. Ok-State
► Saturday's contest is the third meeting of the two teams in a series that is tied 1-1.

Scouting Oregon State
► The Beavers enter the week with a 4-3 overall records and are 3-2 at neutral locations. The defending National Champions posted a 16-0 shutout against Portland on Tuesday. Joey Wong went 5-for-6 with two runs and one RBI. On the season, John Wallace leads the team batting .444 with five runs, two home runs and six RBIs. The Broncos will face Greg Peavey on the mound Sunday afternoon. Peavey has pitched 7.0 innings in two appearances and has allowed 11 runs on 11 hits. He is 0-1 on the season.

All-Time vs. Oregon State
► Sunday's is the 19th meeting between the Beavers and the Broncos. Santa Clara owns a 14-3-1 record in the overall series. However, the two teams have not played each other since the 2000 season.

On Deck
►The Broncos return to action on Friday, March 14 in the first game of a four-game series against the Aggies of UC Davis. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. in Davis, Calif. SCU and UCD will then play a doubleheader on Saturday at Schott Stadium beginning at 1 p.m. The two teams finish the weekend at UC Davis with a 1 p.m. start on Sunday.
