Baseball Drops Series Finale At San Francisco On Sunday
SAN FRANCISCO – Santa Clara baseball fell 12-4 to San Francisco in the series finale on Sunday but won two out of three games over the weekend to take the West Coast Conference series.
The Dons (24-20, 13-8 WCC) collected season-high 18 hits and 12 runs on Sunday including scoring six runs in the second inning to take a 6-1 lead that it would not relinquish.
After the Broncos scored the first run of the game in the second on an RBI double by Austin Reyes (1-for-4, R, RBI), the Dons answered with six runs in the home half of the inning.  San Francisco scored all six runs after two outs stringing together five straight hits, including four extra base hits, to go up 6-1.
Santa Clara (19-22, 6-12 WCC) made it a 6-3 game in the fourth on Tony Boetto's (1-for-4, RBI) RBI single and Joe Becht's RBI grounder but it could not close the gap further.
USF scored a pair of runs each in the fourth, sixth and eighth innings to score 12 runs.  Four Dons - Michael Perri, Ross Puskarich, Brady Bate and Jack Winkler - had three hits each with Winkler driving in a game-high three runs.
Dons starter Landen Bourassa (6-3) went six innings allowing six hits and four runs, three of which were earned, to earn the win.  Grant Goodman picked up a three inning save for his second save of the season.
Bronco starter Alex Waldsmith (0-5) took the loss for the Broncos allowing five runs over 1 2/3 innings.
Next up for the Broncos is a trip to Cal Poly on Tuesday to play the back end of the home-and-home series with the Mustangs.  The two squads faced each other in last week's midweek game at Schott Stadium.
