SAN BRUNO Calif. – For the second time this season Jake Brodt earned Rawlings West Coast Conference Player of the Week honors. The conference made the announcement on Monday.
Brodt helped Santa Clara baseball take two out of three games against San Diego in the WCC opening series, and in the process matching last season's win total of 13. It was the first conference opening series win for the Broncos (13-5, 2-1 WCC) since 2008 when it also took two out of three from San Diego.
In the series, Brodt went 5-for-14 with three doubles, two home runs and drove in seven runs. Defensively, Brodt played first base in the first two games and moved to third in the series finale to record 18 putouts and six assists without committing an error. The move to third base allowed the regular third baseman John Cresto to hit as the designated hitter while he returned from an injury and allowed the regular designated hitter, Niko Holm, to play first.
In the series opener, which the Broncos won 13-2, Brodt was 3-for-5 with two runs and three RBIs. With the game tied 2-2 in the fifth inning, Brodt scored the game winning run as he hit a double with one out and came home on an Evan Haberle single to make it a 3-2 game. The Huntington Beach, California, native was named the Performer of the Game on TheW.tv Friday Night Baseball telecast.
On Sunday, in the series finale, with the Broncos ahead 2-1 in the second inning, Brodt's bases clearing double broke open the game, 5-1. Santa Clara scored five more runs in the third inning to put the Broncos ahead 10-1, which they eventually won 16-7.
This is Brodt's second Rawlings WCC Player of the Week honor this season and the third overall of his Santa Clara career.
